Twenty luggage brands are easy to buy in India. Three companies own thirteen of them.

That is the useful part. Two of those three are listed in Mumbai and one in Hong Kong, so their numbers are public. The rest of the shelf is younger. Those brands are online-first, mostly private, and mostly under ten years old.

This page is a registry, not a shortlist. Every figure below comes from a company page, an exchange disclosure or a named news report, and each one is linked.

Carlton's date is when Safari's India licence began, not when the brand started.

Two rows in that table surprise most people. Skybags and Aristocrat are the same company as VIP. And American Tourister is not really American. Its owner sits in Luxembourg, and the bags sold here are made in Maharashtra.

Ownership decides more than the badge on the bag. A warranty belongs to the owner, not the sub-brand. So a Skybags case claims under VIP's published terms, and a Kamiliant one runs through Samsonite's service network.

The manufacturers

VIP Industries (since 1971)

Founded by Dilip Piramal and headquartered in Mumbai. The company was incorporated in 1968 as Aristo Plast and now trades as VIPIND on the NSE.

It sells under five names: VIP, Skybags, Aristocrat, Alfa and Caprese. Its own site claims eight factories and five million pieces a year. It also claims 45 countries and over 15,000 retail points.

Ownership changed at the end of 2025. In July, Multiples Private Equity said it would buy about 32% from the promoters at ₹388 a share. The deal ran on 24 December. Its group took 25.55% for roughly ₹1,408 crore. The family firms sold 26.07% in all. Dilip Piramal stays on as Chairman Emeritus.

Safari Industries (since 1974)

The brand has been "sharing your Safaris since 1974". Its current owner arrived much later. Sudhir Jatia used to run VIP. He took control of Safari in 2011, and became its MD on 18 April 2012.

Safari runs three of its own brands — Safari, Urban Jungle and Genie — and now licenses Carlton for India. It is listed, so its numbers are public.

Where the bags come from is stated plainly on its own site. Hard luggage is made at Halol in Gujarat. Soft luggage is "primarily imported". That is an unusually direct disclosure for this market, and it is worth knowing before you compare a Safari hardshell with a Safari duffel.

Samsonite Group (Samsonite since 1910)

The oldest name here by a distance. Samsonite was started in 1910 in Denver by Jesse Shwayder. Its head offices are in Luxembourg and Massachusetts. Its shares have traded in Hong Kong since June 2011, under code 1910.

The group owns nine brands in all:

  • Sold in India — Samsonite, American Tourister and Kamiliant, through Samsonite South Asia.
  • The rest — Tumi, Gregory, High Sierra, Xtrem, Lipault and Hartmann.

India is now where the group builds. Its Nashik plant makes 700,000 units a month, up from about 225,000 before 2019. About 10% of that goes for export. American Tourister is roughly 60% of the India business. The plant is now full, and the company is hunting land for a second one.

Wildcraft (since 1998)

Not a luggage company first. Wildcraft began in a Bengaluru garage in 1998, founded by Gaurav Dublish and Siddharth Sood, and built its name on outdoor gear.

Sequoia Capital invested ₹70 crore in 2013. Rucksacks, daypacks and travel bags followed the camping range, which is why its backpacks read better than its trolleys.

The online-first brands

Mokobara (since 2020)

Started in Bengaluru by Sangeet Agrawal and Navin Parwal. Both came from Urban Ladder. Peak XV Partners led a $12 million round in February 2024. The brand booked ₹117 crore of sales in FY24.

Its first cabin bag was designed in London and made in China. It has since opened physical stores, so "online-first" no longer means online-only.

uppercase (since 2021)

Run by Acefour Accessories and founded by Sudip Ghose, who spent years at VIP. It is the sustainability play in this market, and unusually it can show the paperwork.

Inc42 reported FY25 revenue of ₹83.13 crore. It also has its own Nashik line, making 40,000 units a month. The shells use RCS-certified recycled polycarbonate. The fabric uses GRS-certified yarn. Both cost up to 30% more than the usual material.

Nasher Miles (since 2017)

A Mumbai family business — Abhishek Daga, Shruti Kedia Daga and Lokesh Daga. It reached ₹100 crore in yearly sales. It also took an all-shark deal on Shark Tank India, season 3.

It also localised early. The company says it started Indian production in 2021-22, and that Made in India is now 70% of the range.

Assembly

Gurugram-based, and run by co-founder Mohit Garg.

The range is wider than most here. Alongside hard luggage in three sizes it sells backpacks, duffles, neck pillows, sling bags and laptop sleeves.

EUME (since 2018)

Founded in Mumbai by Naina and Pranay Parekh. Its signature is a built-in massager in the back panel of its bags, which is not a feature anyone else here sells.

It is the smallest of this group. Inc42 reported FY24 operating revenue of ₹19.23 crore and a ₹25 crore Series A led by Ashish Kacholia in May 2025.

Licensed fashion brands

A clothing label on a suitcase is usually a licence. The fashion house lends the name. Somebody else makes the bag and answers the warranty call.

Tommy Hilfiger

The clothes and the luggage come from different companies. Tommy Hilfiger travel gear in India is made and sold under licence by Brand Concepts Ltd, which trades as Bagline.

That is who you deal with when something breaks. Its published terms run three years on luggage. Register in thirty days and you get five. The same firm licenses Superdry, Benetton, Aeropostale and Juicy Couture bags here.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns Skybags?

VIP Industries. Skybags launched in 2011 as VIP's younger line. It sits with VIP, Aristocrat, Alfa and Caprese under one listed company. So a Skybags case and a VIP case come from the same maker, and the same factories.

Is American Tourister an Indian brand?

No. It belongs to Samsonite Group. That group has head offices in Luxembourg and Massachusetts, and its shares trade in Hong Kong. The bags sold here are mostly made in India, at the Nashik plant. The name is American. The owner is not. The factory is Indian.

Who owns Carlton luggage in India now?

Safari Industries sells it now. VIP owned the brand from 2004. It stopped selling Carlton bags on 1 June 2026, after a Supreme Court order. Safari took an India licence for the name in February 2026, from Carlton Retail. The term is twenty years, with an option for twenty more.

Which Indian luggage brands are listed on the stock market?

Two of them. VIP Industries trades on the NSE and BSE, and Safari Industries is listed too. Samsonite Group is listed in Hong Kong under code 1910. Every other brand on this page — Mokobara, uppercase, Nasher Miles, Assembly, EUME, Wildcraft — is private.

Is VIP Industries still owned by the Piramal family?

No. A group led by Multiples bought control in December 2025. It took 25.55% at ₹388 a share. That is worth about ₹1,408 crore. The family firms sold 26.07% in all. Dilip Piramal started VIP in 1971. He stays on as Chairman Emeritus.

Which luggage brands actually manufacture in India?

Samsonite makes 700,000 units a month at Nashik, its biggest plant anywhere. VIP runs plants at Nasik, Jalgaon, Nagpur and Sinnar. Safari moulds hard luggage at Halol. uppercase has its own Nashik line. Nasher Miles says 70% of its range is Indian-made.

Which luggage brands are Indian-owned?

Most of them. VIP, Safari and Wildcraft are Indian companies. So are Mokobara, uppercase, Nasher Miles, Assembly and EUME. Samsonite, American Tourister, Kamiliant and Tumi belong to Samsonite Group. That group is not Indian. Carlton is a foreign name, licensed to Safari for India.

Is Mokobara made in India?

Not at the start. Its first cabin bag was drawn up in London and made in China. The brand has not said how much it now builds in India. So treat any figure you read elsewhere as unproven. Assembly, uppercase and Nasher Miles are all clearer on this.

Which is the biggest luggage brand in India?

It depends what you count. VIP calls itself Asia's largest luggage maker and the world's second largest. Samsonite Group describes itself as the world's largest travel luggage company. By single-factory output, Samsonite's Nashik plant is the biggest in the country.
